Naveen Patnaik Reaffirms BJD’s Push for ST Status to 169 Tribal Communities

Bhubaneswar: BJD president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to securing Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for 169 tribal communities in Odisha.

Addressing the issue, Patnaik emphasised that tribal empowerment has always been central to BJD’s development agenda, spanning education, livelihood, and forest rights.

He highlighted initiatives such as granting panchayats rights to collect forest produce, establishing thousands of hostels for tribal students, and launching the Anwesha programme to support higher education.

Forest land rights have also been ensured for tribal families.

Patnaik underscored the role of Special Development Councils (SDCs) in 23 districts, which safeguard tribal art, culture, and traditions while enhancing livelihoods.

He described BJD as the “best friend” of tribal communities, stressing that empowerment is not just a promise but the party’s core focus.

Urging society to respect tribal knowledge and culture, Patnaik reiterated that the BJD will continue its efforts until the demand for ST status is fulfilled.
