Jajpur: Couple Found Hanging From Banyan Tree, Police Suspect Suicide Pact

A tragic incident has shocked residents of Jajpur district after a young couple was discovered hanging from a banyan tree near the Naun‑Mania sluice gate at Mohantypatna village.

The deceased have been identified as Samir Das (25) of Ishwarpur village and Surekha Malik (22) of Mohantypatna.

Samir, who worked at a plywood company in Kerala, had recently returned home.

He reportedly left his house on Monday evening and did not return.

On Tuesday morning, villagers found the couple hanging with a dupatta tied around their necks.

Surekha was wearing sindoor, mangalsutra, alta, and bangles, while Samir also bore traces of sindoor and alta—suggesting the two may have symbolically united before their deaths.

Police suspect a suicide pact, though the exact reason remains unclear.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is underway. The incident has left both villages in grief and shock.
