Jagadish Chandra Kanungo, Eminent Odia Artist, Passes Away at 86
Bhubaneswar: Odisha mourns the loss of eminent artist, editor, and art critic Jagadish Chandra Kanungo, who passed away at the age of 86 in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Kanungo was widely recognised as a pioneer of modern Odia art, blending traditional forms like Pattachitra with contemporary styles.
His editorial leadership in journals and souvenirs of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, along with his stewardship of the magazine Rangarekha in 1986, positioned him as a key voice in the state’s art movement.
He was honoured with the Dharmapada Award, Odisha’s highest recognition for visual arts, and served as president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi.
In 2021, he received the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman, further cementing his legacy as a cultural torchbearer.
Kanungo’s passing marks the end of an era for Odisha’s art fraternity, leaving behind a rich legacy of creativity, critique, and preservation.
