Independence Day 2026: Five Bravehearts from Odisha Police Awarded

Bhubaneswar: Five Odisha Police personnel will be honoured with the prestigious Gallantry Medal (GM) on Independence Day 2026 for their exceptional bravery and service.

The awardees include Sub‑Inspector Manmath Kumar Mahapatra, Havildar Nirakar Bhue, and commandos Santosh Gurung, Suman Pun, and Suresh Chandra Puta.

The Gallantry Medal recognises conspicuous acts of courage such as saving lives, protecting property, preventing crimes, and apprehending criminals, often under grave risk.

This year, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced 301 Gallantry Medals nationwide — 272 for police and 29 for fire service personnel.

Of these, 197 awards go to officers serving in Left Wing Extremism‑affected areas, 51 in Jammu & Kashmir, 12 in the North‑East, and 41 across other regions.

The recognition underscores the valour and commitment of Odisha Police officers who continue to safeguard public safety under challenging circumstances.
