Hirakud Dam Shuts 13 Gates as Flood Situation Eases

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities have closed 13 out of 15 sluice gates as the flood inflow into the Mahanadi basin shows signs of easing.

As of 9:30 AM on October 1, 2026, the reservoir level stood at 629.65 feet.

The dam is currently receiving 1,77,597 cusecs of water per second while discharging 66,003 cusecs.

Of this, 32,822 cusecs are being released through the two active sluice gates, while the rest is managed via the power channel, canals, and industrial allocations.

Officials confirmed that the controlled release is aimed at balancing reservoir safety with downstream flood management.

With inflow volumes declining, the situation is expected to stabilise further in the coming days.
