Hirakud Dam Closes 2 Gates, Manages Floodwater Discharge Through 8 Gates

Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: Hirakud Dam authorities have closed two sluice gates while continuing to discharge floodwater through eight gates, balancing inflow and outflow amid rising reservoir levels.

At 9 am, the water level stood at 624.25 feet, showing an upward trend.

The dam recorded an average inflow of 2,05,974 cusecs against an outflow of 1,94,927 cusecs.

Of the discharge, 1,59,970 cusecs flowed through the spillway, 32,016 cusecs via the power channel, 229 cusecs for industrial use, and 2,712 cusecs into canals.

Downstream discharge was measured at 3,05,000 cusecs at Khairmal, 3,62,500 cusecs at Barmul, and 5,11,258 cusecs at Mundali, highlighting the scale of floodwater management.

Authorities continue to monitor inflow trends to ensure safety across the Mahanadi basin.
