Chitalagi Amavasya 2026: Golden Ornaments Restored to Deities, Darshan Suspended for Five Hours
Puri: The sacred festival of Chitalagi Amavasya, also known as Chittau Amavasya, will be observed at the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during the holy month of Shravan.
As part of the Chitalagi Niti, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will be adorned with their traditional golden forehead ornaments (Chitas).
These ornaments, removed during Snana Purnima, are ceremonially restored to the deities on this auspicious day.
Temple authorities have announced that public darshan will remain suspended from 2 pm to 7 pm while the rituals are performed. Devotees are advised to plan their visits accordingly.
This year’s observance coincides with a solar eclipse, though it will not be visible in India. Hence, temple rituals will continue unaffected.
The Chitalagi Amavasya festival holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, symbolising divine adornment and renewal, and continues to draw thousands of devotees to Puri Srimandir each year.
