Puri: A 45‑year‑old home guard, Pradeep Kumar Mahanta from Kendujhar district, tragically died while on duty during the Rath Yatra in Puri.
Mahanta reportedly fell ill late Saturday night, with initial suspicion pointing to a possible snakebite, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
He was part of a 50‑member contingent deployed for festival security.
His sudden demise cast a shadow over the grand festivities attended by thousands of devotees.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed condolences and announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia relief from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Additionally, one eligible family member will be appointed as a home guard.
Police officials confirmed that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death.
