Bulldozer Justice in Barbil: Illegal Encroachments Razed, Criminal Hideouts Flattened

Barbil/Keonjhar : In a dramatic display of law enforcement inspired by the Uttar Pradesh model, Barbil administration launched a decisive crackdown today against illegal encroachments on government land. The operation, carried out in Barakat Nagar and Bhanj Colony under Barbil police jurisdiction, saw bulldozers demolishing homes linked to individuals involved in criminal cases.

The action targeted structures not only built unlawfully on government land but also associated with families entangled in multiple criminal proceedings. Despite prior notices issued a month ago by Barbil Municipality instructing the occupants to vacate, no compliance was observed—prompting the administration to act.

Monday at 7 AM, under the supervision of Barbil Tehsildar and Executive Magistrate Rakesh Kumar Panda, SDPO Devendra Nath Pingua, and Barbil IIC Ashok Kumar Nayak, the operation commenced with the deployment of four platoons of police force. Two JCBs and one grader machine were used to raze the homes of Sahadat Khan and MD Raja alias Nihal Khan in Barakat Nagar, and Alok Ram and Abhimanyu Pradhan in Bhanj Colony.

The demolition drive was witnessed by several senior officials including Bolani IIC Labo Boda, Joda IIC Prashant Kumar Samal and Rugudi IIC Ravi Shankar Bhainsa, along with personnel from the municipality, tehsil office and fire brigade.

Speaking to the media, Executive Magistrate Rakesh Kumar Panda stated,
“Action will be taken against W, X, Y, Z—all illegal occupants. The government has ordered complete evacuation of encroached government land. Since nearly 50% of Barbil’s government land is under illegal possession, clearing it all in one day is impractical. In the first phase, seven encroachments were marked for removal—four have been cleared today, and the remaining three will be addressed tomorrow. Anyone occupying government land for unlawful activities will face strict action.”

However, the operation was not without controversy. Prabha Devi, one of the affected residents, expressed anguish:
“My son is accused in a single case which is still under trial. Despite a High Court order, my house was demolished.”

The bulldozer campaign has sent a clear message—Barbil is now under the rule of law, and the nexus of crime and encroachment will no longer be tolerated.
