BJD Slams Odisha Govt Over Cancellation of Student Union Elections
Bhubaneswar: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly criticised the Odisha government over its decision to cancel student union elections and close several educational institutions amid unrest, describing the move as an attack on student democracy.
Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, BJD leaders alleged that the government’s decision undermines the democratic rights of students and restricts their opportunity to elect representatives through a transparent electoral process.
The party extended support to student protests that have erupted in different parts of the state following the cancellation of elections.
BJD leaders also expressed concern over the closure of campuses and educational institutions, stating that academic activities should not be disrupted due to political decisions.
According to the party, candidates supported by the student wing of the BJD were performing strongly in several institutions.
The opposition alleged that fears of an unfavourable electoral outcome prompted the government to halt the election process.
The BJD further demanded that the state government immediately review its decision and restore both campus elections and normal academic operations.
Party leaders maintained that student bodies play a vital role in nurturing future leadership and strengthening democratic values within educational institutions.
The issue has triggered a political debate across Odisha, with student organisations and political parties continuing to voice their views on the future of student representation in colleges and universities.
