BJP Targets Congress Over Silence on Harassment Allegations Against Manipur MP

Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing its leadership of maintaining silence over sexual harassment allegations against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Member of Parliament from Manipur and a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Addressing a press conference, Dr Aishwarya Biswal, President of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Odisha, questioned the Congress leadership’s stance on the allegations and demanded a public response from senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.

According to Dr Biswal, JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee had reportedly recommended action following complaints lodged by 11 female students against the professor.

She said the allegations raise serious concerns and have the potential to undermine the sanctity of the teacher-student relationship.

The BJP leader alleged that the Congress has failed to uphold its stated commitment to women’s rights by not addressing the issue publicly.

She urged the opposition party to clarify its position on the matter and explain whether it supports transparency and accountability in cases involving allegations of misconduct.

During the press interaction, Dr Biswal also criticised Rahul Gandhi over a range of political issues, accusing him and the Congress of adopting selective standards when dealing with matters related to women’s safety and dignity.

Highlighting BJP’s position on women’s empowerment, she referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, stating that the BJP has consistently supported greater political representation for women.

She asserted that the party remains committed to taking action against injustice and ensuring respect for women’s rights.

The remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over accountability and the response of political parties to allegations involving public representatives.
