Odisha Braces for Light Rain, Lightning as Cyclonic Circulation Becomes Active Over Malacca Strait

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that a cyclonic circulation currently active over the Strait of Malacca may influence weather patterns over eastern India in the coming days, with the possibility of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

According to meteorologists, the upper-air cyclonic circulation, which earlier persisted over the Gulf of Thailand and neighbouring regions, has shifted towards the Strait of Malacca and is likely to move over the Andaman Sea.

The system is expected to strengthen atmospheric conditions conducive to the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, Odisha continues to experience the impact of multiple weather systems, including a cyclonic circulation over central parts of the state and a trough extending from northwest Rajasthan through Madhya Pradesh to central Odisha.

These systems are expected to trigger light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in several districts.

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for several coastal and adjoining districts, including Baleswar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert for thunderstorms, lightning strikes and gusty surface winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph.

Rainfall activity has already been recorded across many parts of the state, with Puri registering the highest precipitation during the last 24 hours.

While intermittent rain is likely to continue over the next day, weather conditions are expected to improve thereafter.

The IMD has forecast largely dry weather across Odisha from October 12 onwards, with no significant change in maximum or minimum temperatures during the following week.

Authorities have urged residents, particularly in coastal districts, to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of lightning and thunderstorms.
