BJD MP Sasmit Patra Urges CM Majhi for Swift Action as Mahanadi Tribunal Issues Final Warning

Bhubaneswar, April 25: BJD MP Dr Sasmit Patra has written to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, pressing for immediate action after the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal issued a stern warning to both Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

In its April 20 order, the Tribunal expressed frustration over repeated adjournments and delays in finalising the Minutes of the April 8 meeting on annual water availability (MAF).

It granted a “last opportunity” for both states to submit finalised proposals by May 2, 2026, at 11 AM.

Patra emphasised that determining annual water availability is crucial for Odisha’s allocation rights, downstream protection, and technical positioning in the dispute.

He urged the CM to convene an urgent meeting with the Water Resources, Law, and other departments to finalise Odisha’s stance before the deadline.

Failure to comply could force the Tribunal to decide the matter on the merits, reducing the scope for negotiated settlement and potentially weakening Odisha’s case.
