BJD Moves DGP Over Alleged Attack on Ex-MLA Pranab Balabantray, Seeks Swift Action

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has submitted a memorandum to the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP), seeking a fair and impartial investigation into the alleged attack on former Dharmasala MLA Pranab Kumar Balabantray, while demanding immediate action against those involved and enhanced security for him.

According to the memorandum, the incident reportedly took place during a Jan Sampark Padayatra at Madhupurgada in Jajpur district, where Balabantray and his supporters were allegedly attacked by a group of individuals.

The party claimed that the attackers were armed with weapons and caused damage to several vehicles, including the former MLA’s vehicle.

The BJD has urged the state police to identify and arrest all those responsible, preserve evidence related to the incident, and ensure adequate protection for Balabantray, witnesses, and party workers associated with the case.

In its memorandum, the regional party also highlighted a series of alleged attacks and incidents involving Balabantray over the past two years, asserting that repeated occurrences have raised concerns over his safety and the prevailing law-and-order situation in the area.

Following the incident, Balabantray reportedly lodged a complaint and staged a protest outside the office of the Superintendent of Police in Jajpur, demanding the arrest of those involved.

He alleged that supporters linked to the ruling side in the constituency were behind the attack.

However, the allegations have been denied by the opposing camp, which maintained that anyone found guilty should face legal action regardless of political affiliation.

Police have registered two separate FIRs concerning the incident and initiated an investigation under the supervision of a senior officer.

Security arrangements have also been strengthened in the area, with round-the-clock protection reportedly offered to Balabantray.

The developments have intensified political tensions in Dharmasala, with attention now focused on the state police investigation and the response of the Odisha DGP to the BJD’s demands.
