Bhitarkanika Bird Census Takes Flight in Kendrapara

Kendrapara, Sept 3: The annual native bird census commenced today at Bhitarkanika National Park and Sanctuary under the Rajnagar Forest Division.

The three-day survey, running from September 3 to 5, aims to document avian diversity across Mathaadia, Durgaprasad Dia, and Lakshmi Prasad Dia.

Four teams of forest staff, each comprising 4–5 members, are conducting the census under the guidance of ornithologists.

Prior to the exercise, staff underwent training on September 2 to ensure accurate documentation.

Daily counts are scheduled between 6 AM and 12 PM.

So far, around 10 species have been recorded, including Asian Openbill (Gendalia), Little Cormorant (Panikua), Majhia Baga, Chhota Baga, Rani Baga, Kapar Khai, and Andharia Baga.

The census underscores Bhitarkanika’s ecological importance and supports ongoing conservation efforts in Odisha’s premier sanctuary.
