Baleshwar Urban Flood: Fifth Deluge in a Month Submerges Homes and Roads

Heavy overnight rains triggered yet another urban flood in Baleshwar, marking the fifth such deluge this month.

Streets in Gudipada, Congress Gali, Nuasahi, and Chidiapol Square were submerged under nearly three feet of water, leaving commuters stranded and businesses paralysed.

Hundreds of homes and shops across colonies like Telenga Sahi, Padhuapada, Satyanagar, Ranipatna, Angaragadia, Ekatanagar, and Dwarikanagar reported drain water entering their premises.

Connectivity between the bus stand and Remuna Road was cut off, worsening the crisis.

Despite over Rs 50 crore spent on drainage projects in the past 15 years, residents continue to face recurrent flooding due to blocked drains, encroachments, and unplanned construction.

Agricultural losses were also severe, with nearly 30 panchayats in Remuna and Sadar blocks reporting submerged farmland and crop damage.

According to official data, Baleshwar district recorded 112 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, with Bhograi topping the chart at 236 mm.

Locals expressed frustration, alleging successive governments and civic authorities have failed to provide lasting solutions, leaving the city vulnerable to every spell of heavy rain.
