Odisha Braces for Heavy Rain as Low-Pressure System Forms Over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal–Bangladesh coast, triggering an active cyclonic circulation that is set to intensify rainfall across Odisha.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy to very heavy showers are expected in northern districts including Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kataka, and Kendrapada. Kendujhar is likely to witness particularly intense rainfall on Thursday and Friday.

Western Odisha districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Debagada, and Balasore will also experience widespread showers, while southern Odisha may see isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Wind speeds of 30–40 kmph are forecast in several regions, raising concerns about localised flooding and disruption of daily life.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, follow official advisories, and take precautions during thunderstorms.

This marks another active phase of the monsoon in Odisha, with the system expected to sustain heavy rainfall activity statewide over the coming days.
