Wild Elephant Dies in Sundargarh, Forest Officials Probe Possible Electrocution
Sundargarh: A wild elephant was found dead in an agricultural field at Dumerta village under Bondamunda panchayat in Bisra block of Sundargarh district on Wednesday morning, triggering concern among forest officials and wildlife conservationists.
According to reports, the tusker’s carcass was discovered entangled in a solar fencing wire, raising suspicions of electrocution.
Following the discovery, officials from the Rourkela Forest Division rushed to the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.
Preliminary observations suggest that the elephant may have come into contact with an electric current while moving through the area, though the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
Forest personnel are conducting a detailed examination of the site and collecting evidence to determine whether illegal electrification of fencing or other factors contributed to the animal’s death.
A postmortem examination is also expected to provide further clarity.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over human-elephant conflict and the risks posed by electrified fencing in areas frequented by wild elephants.
Authorities have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken if any violation of wildlife protection norms is detected during the investigation.
The final cause of death will be established after the completion of the forest department’s inquiry.
