Supreme Court Holds Verdict on Odisha DGP Row

The Supreme Court of India has reserved its verdict in the contentious Odisha DGP appointment case, linking the outcome to a similar petition from Jharkhand scheduled for hearing on October 8, 2026.

During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Advocate General Pitambar Acharya defended the Odisha government’s decision to expand the list of candidates beyond the three IPS officers recommended by the UPSC under the Prakash Singh guidelines.

The state created an ex‑cadre post and resubmitted a panel of eight names, sparking debate over transparency and compliance.

The Court questioned the rationale behind bypassing the UPSC’s initial recommendations and scrutinised whether the process adhered to both Ministry of Home Affairs parameters and the Prakash Singh framework.

The Solicitor General argued that enlarging the pool ensured fairness and broader choice.
