Puri Records 143.8 mm Rain Ahead of Rath Yatra, Schools Shut

Puri, Odisha (July 15, 2026): Heavy rainfall lashed Puri with 143.8 mm recorded in 24 hours, raising concerns ahead of the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026.

The downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms, prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a safety advisory for devotees.

The IMD forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, with daytime temperatures between 27–29°C and humidity levels peaking at 98%.

In response, the Puri district administration declared a holiday for all schools—government, private, aided, and Anganwadi to Plus II—on July 15, 2026, prioritising student safety.

Authorities urged pilgrims to follow safety measures: avoid standing under trees or temporary structures, wear non‑slip footwear on slippery stretches of the Grand Road, stay hydrated, and monitor official bulletins.

Special precautions were advised for senior citizens, children, and those with medical conditions.

As thousands of devotees gather, officials continue to monitor evolving weather conditions to ensure a safe and smooth Rath Yatra.
