Polavaram Dam Impact: BJD Threatens Statewide Protests Over Odisha Tribals’ Rights

Bhubaneswar: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced plans for statewide protests against the Polavaram dam project, citing grave concerns over its impact on Odisha’s tribal communities.

Party leaders argue that the dam, being constructed in Andhra Pradesh, will submerge villages in Odisha’s border districts, displacing hundreds of tribal families and disrupting their livelihoods.

The BJD has accused the central government of ignoring Odisha’s repeated objections and failing to safeguard the rights of affected communities.

“The Polavaram project poses a direct threat to our tribal population. We will not remain silent while their homes and culture are endangered,” said senior BJD leaders during a press briefing.

The party has demanded immediate intervention, warning that failure to address Odisha’s concerns will trigger mass demonstrations across the state.

The issue is expected to intensify political debates ahead of upcoming elections, with tribal welfare emerging as a key agenda point.
