Odisha Showcases Irrigation Achievements at Jal Shakti Summit

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presented the state’s ambitious water and irrigation initiatives at the Jal Shakti Summit in New Delhi, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister C.R. Patil.

Majhi highlighted that projects worth Rs 54,000 crore have been sanctioned in the past two years, expanding irrigation to 3.20 lakh hectares of farmland.

The state has completed 770 new check dams, nine In-Stream Storage Structures (ISS), renovation of 1,312 old check dams, and several major projects including dams, barrages, pipeline networks, and lift irrigation schemes.

Upcoming works include 14 ISS projects, six medium irrigation projects, 58 mega lift schemes, and five minor irrigation projects.

Odisha has also strengthened rural water access with over 3,224 community lift irrigation schemes, 20,228 deep borewells, 8,917 solar borewells, and 20,000 rooftop rainwater harvesting structures under the CHHAT scheme.

The Kanupur project, stalled since 2003–04, has been revived, with dam construction completed in August 2026 and canal networks set to finish within a year, irrigating 25,000 hectares.

Odisha was recently declared the best state in the 5th National Water Awards.

CM Majhi reaffirmed the state’s commitment to water resource management under the “double‑engine” governments at the Centre and State.
