Odisha Lashed by Torrential Rainfall; Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nabarangpur Cross 200 mm in 24 Hours
Southern Odisha districts witnessed extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several regions recording more than 200 mm.
Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi topped the chart at 345 mm, followed by Gunupur in Rayagada with 260 mm, Kashipur at 212 mm, and Jaipatna in Kalahandi at 200 mm.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the downpour is linked to a low‑pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal, intensified by an upper air cyclonic circulation near the West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts.
The IMD confirmed the system’s presence at 5:30 AM IST on August 23, 2026.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as continuous heavy rainfall raises concerns about flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
