Odisha Hosts Global Dialogue on Smart Irrigation

Bhubaneswar, Odisha: The Department of Water Resources, Government of Odisha, in collaboration with JICA and Nippon Koei, hosted a one‑day workshop on Smart Irrigation and Demand‑Driven Water Management at Lok Seva Bhawan.

The event brought together senior officials, technical experts, and international representatives from Japan and Indonesia, alongside specialists from Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan.

Discussions centred on moving beyond infrastructure creation to farmer‑centric irrigation systems that enhance livelihoods, promote crop diversification, and build climate resilience.

Odisha’s OIIPCRA project was highlighted for its climate‑resilient irrigation practices, tank rehabilitation, and strengthening of Pani Panchayats.

Case studies from Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan showcased innovative approaches to crop diversification and water sector livelihood improvement.

International experts shared insights on digital transformation, flood management, and watershed planning.

Key takeaways emphasised the importance of real‑time data, digital platforms, and demand‑driven solutions tailored to farmers’ needs.

The workshop positioned Odisha as a hub for innovative irrigation practices, blending local experiences with global expertise to tackle climate variability and water challenges.
