Odisha Grants Protected Monument Status to Historic Kedargouri Temple Complex

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: The Odisha Government has officially declared the historic Kedargouri Temple Complex in Bhubaneswar’s Old Town area as a protected monument, marking a significant step towards preserving the state’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

The declaration was issued by the Odia Language, Literature & Culture (OLLC) Department, which confirmed its earlier preliminary notification regarding the monument’s protected status.

The decision has been taken under the provisions of the Orissa Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1956.

According to the Extraordinary Gazette notification, the state government confirmed its earlier notification dated June 23, 2026, declaring the Kedargouri Temple Complex situated in the Old Town area of Khordha district as a protected monument under the Act.

The notification was issued by Bijay Ketan Upadhyaya, Secretary to Government, OLLC Department, by order of the Governor.

Following the declaration, the State Archaeology Department will undertake the conservation, protection, and maintenance of the ancient temple complex.

Currently, the department is responsible for maintaining 212 protected monuments across Odisha, while the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) oversees 82 monuments in the state.

The move is expected to strengthen preservation efforts for the historic shrine, which holds considerable religious, cultural, and historical significance in Bhubaneswar’s heritage-rich Old Town area.
