Odisha CM Majhi Flags Prison Security Concerns After Escapes and Custodial Deaths
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in a written reply to the Odisha Assembly, revealed alarming figures on prison and custodial lapses across the state.
Since July last year, 13 prisoners escaped from nine different jails, with police managing to recapture six while the rest remain at large.
Equally troubling are custodial deaths: 31 undertrial prisoners died in jails over the past year, including eight suicides. In addition, 39 accused individuals managed to escape from police custody during the same period.
Majhi assured legislators that the government is reviewing prison safety measures and strengthening monitoring systems to prevent further escapes and custodial lapses.
He emphasised reforms as a priority to safeguard prisoner rights and ensure accountability in correctional facilities.
These revelations highlight the urgent need for systemic reforms in Odisha’s correctional infrastructure and custodial management.
