Odisha Bandh on October 8: Essential Services to Remain Open Amid Statewide Shutdown Call
Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to witness a 12-hour statewide bandh on October 8 following a shutdown call by opposition parties under the INDIA bloc, led by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC).
The bandh will be observed from 6 AM to 6 PM and is expected to impact transportation, commercial activities, and public movement across the state.
The opposition has announced the bandh over multiple issues, including demands for the repeal of the MMDR Amendment Act 2026, accountability for alleged errors in school textbooks for Classes I to VIII, and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Authorities anticipate disruptions to road transport, with private buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws likely to remain off roads in many areas.
Protest activities, including picketing and road blockades, may affect travel on major highways and key urban routes across Odisha.
Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid non-essential travel during bandh hours.
Business establishments, shops, and several private offices are also expected to remain closed or operate with limited staff, potentially affecting normal economic activities throughout the day.
While no statewide closure order has been issued for educational institutions, some private schools and colleges may adopt alternative arrangements such as online classes or modified schedules depending on local conditions.
The organisers have stated that essential services will not be affected by the bandh.
Ambulances, hospitals, pharmacies, diagnostic centres, fire services, power and water utilities, and vehicles carrying milk and essential commodities will continue to operate.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Home Department has directed district administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.
Additional security personnel are expected to be deployed at sensitive locations, including railway stations, bus terminals, and government offices.
Citizens are advised to stay updated through official announcements and local authorities regarding transport services and public arrangements during the bandh period.
