NIT Rourkela Infrastructure Inauguration: Dharmendra Pradhan Launches Rs 200 Cr Projects
Rourkela, Dec 27: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated a series of landmark infrastructure projects worth over Rs 200 crore at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, marking a major step in the institute’s academic and campus development.
The highlights included the unveiling of a state‑of‑the‑art Indoor Sports Complex built at a cost of Rs 35 crore, featuring multipurpose courts, yoga and cultural halls, squash facilities, and a modern gymnasium.
A 1,000‑seater open‑air theatre was also inaugurated, designed to host athletic, cultural, and recreational events.
Pradhan also laid the foundation stones for three major projects: a Civil Engineering Department building (Rs 91.18 crore), a new Institute Guest House (Rs 33.51 crore), and a 500-bed capacity girls’ hostel funded by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd under CSR (Rs 55.35 crore).
Speaking at the event, Pradhan praised NIT Rourkela’s role in advancing education, research, and innovation, linking its progress to the national vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047
Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao highlighted the institute’s strong NIRF rankings and commitment to sustainable development.
With over Rs 800 crore worth of upcoming projects—including new hostels, faculty residences, and an extension centre in Bhubaneswar—NIT Rourkela is poised to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading hubs for engineering education, research, and holistic student development.
