Mahanadi Water Dispute: Amit Shah Chairs Crucial Meeting with Odisha & Chhattisgarh CMs

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today chaired a high‑level meeting with the Chief Ministers of Odisha and Chhattisgarh, alongside officials from the Central Water Commission, to address the long‑standing Mahanadi water dispute.

The dispute, which has persisted for years, centres on upstream barrages built by Chhattisgarh that Odisha claims have reduced water flow into its territory.

With BJP governments now in power at the Centre and in both states, the meeting is seen as a significant opportunity to reach a collaborative resolution.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his government’s willingness to abide by the outcome of the discussions, signalling a constructive approach.

Odisha’s leadership emphasised the need to safeguard farmers and communities dependent on the Mahanadi basin.

The intervention is being viewed as a step toward cooperative federalism, balancing ecological sustainability with regional development.

Citizens across both states await a permanent solution that ensures equitable water sharing and long‑term stability in the basin.
