Mahanadi River Alert: Floodwater Discharge from Hirakud Dam

Bhubaneswar, July 6: Hirakud Dam authorities have announced that the season’s first floodwater release from the reservoir will take place at 11:00 am on July 9.

The decision follows continuous rainfall in the dam’s upper catchment areas.

Officials have cautioned residents downstream that water levels in the Mahanadi River and its tributaries will rise significantly once the gates are opened.

People have been strongly advised to avoid entering the river or using it for bathing, fishing, or other activities during the discharge period.

The administration has clarified that it will not be held responsible for accidents if safety advisories are ignored.

Vulnerable downstream regions have been asked to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities and disaster management teams.
