Hirakud Dam Opens Gates, Mahanadi Swells in Sonepur

Sonepur: The Hirakud Dam authorities on Friday discharged the season’s first floodwater through 10 sluice gates, raising the water level of the Mahanadi River in downstream areas.

The inflow reached Sonepur around 6:30 am, nearly 18 hours after the release.

Officials confirmed that the river remains within safe limits, with no immediate flood threat. Continuous monitoring is underway to ensure safety.

Fishermen secured boats and nets, while residents along the riverbanks were advised to stay alert and follow precautionary measures.

The release is part of routine reservoir management during the monsoon season to regulate rising water levels.

Authorities assured that the situation is under control.
