Flood Threat Returns as Hirakud Opens More Gates, Baitarani Swells
Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall in upstream catchments has once again raised flood concerns in Odisha.
Authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened four additional gates, bringing the total to 12, to release excess water from the reservoir.
Downstream districts have been put on alert as water levels in the Mahanadi system continue to rise.
The Baitarani River has also reached the warning mark near Akhuapada, triggering fears of inundation in Bhadrak’s Bhandari Pokhari and Dhamnagar blocks.
Farmers are anxious about possible damage to standing crops, while villagers in low‑lying areas brace for floodwater entering their homes.
The district administration and Water Resources Department are closely monitoring embankments, with relief and rescue teams kept on standby.
Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories as the situation develops.
