Kalahandi Teacher Dies Amid Oxygen Shortage, Family Alleges Negligence
A tragic incident unfolded at Dharamgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital in Kalahandi district when Sudhanshu Shekhar Sahu, a 51-year-old teacher from Gorla High School in Nuapada, lost his life due to an alleged shortage of oxygen.
Sahu, who was visiting his native village Chilipa, experienced severe breathing difficulties and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors placed him on an electric oscillator, but his oxygen levels continued to drop.
When medical staff requested oxygen cylinders, the pharmacist reportedly said none were available.
Relatives frantically contacted a local legislator, and although a cylinder eventually arrived, it was too late to save him.
The incident triggered unrest at the hospital premises, with family members accusing staff of negligence and demanding strict action. Police intervened to restore calm.
Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dr Sadanand Panigrahi denied negligence claims, stating that the patient was in an acute condition and had been referred to Bhawanipatna District Hospital.
Sahu’s funeral was held in his village, where his son Mihir Ranjan performed the last rites. Teachers and colleagues from Gorla High School joined the grieving family.
As the sole breadwinner, his death has left the family in crisis. Relatives have urged the government to provide employment to one family member, highlighting broader concerns about healthcare infrastructure in the region.
