Dharmendra Pradhan Urges Gadkari to Fast-Track NH-49 Safety Projects in Debagarh

Debagarh: Union Education Minister and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to prioritise critical road safety and infrastructure projects along National Highway 49 (NH-49) in Debagarh district, citing growing traffic congestion and increasing accident risks.

In a letter addressed to Nitin Gadkari, Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted the need for immediate intervention to improve traffic management and commuter safety on the busy highway corridor, which carries a significant volume of interstate freight and local traffic.

One of the key proposals is the construction of a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk, a major Y-junction located near the Collectorate, New Bus Stand and Women’s College in Debagarh.

The proposed project also includes the development of service roads and enhanced street lighting to ease congestion and reduce accident risks.

Pradhan has also sought the construction of an underpass at Birsamunda Chowk, where NH-49 intersects with State Highway-21.

The proposed underpass is aimed at separating high-speed highway traffic from local vehicles, thereby improving traffic flow and reducing collision risks.

Additionally, the Sambalpur MP recommended the development of service roads in Kala, Kandhal and Tileibani areas.

The proposal includes drainage infrastructure, pedestrian guardrails and improved highway lighting to support the growing transportation needs resulting from rapid urbanisation in these localities.

Calling the projects essential for public safety and regional connectivity, Dharmendra Pradhan urged the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to accord priority to the proposed works.

The proposed improvements are expected to enhance commuter safety, streamline traffic movement and support economic activity along one of the region’s key transport corridors.
