Balasore Land Dispute Turns Deadly, Family Protests Police Inaction

Balasore: A violent clash over a land boundary dispute in Haripur village, Balasore district, claimed the life of 39‑year‑old Kamala Sethi.

The incident occurred when construction work at Surendra Sethi’s house was opposed by neighbour Bharat Jena and his family, who alleged encroachment.

The confrontation escalated, with the accused allegedly attacking Surendra, his wife Shankuntala, daughter Tulasi, and sister Kamala using spades and shovels.

Kamala succumbed to her injuries, while Shankuntala remains in critical condition at SCB Medical College, Cuttack.

In a dramatic protest against alleged police inaction, Kamala’s relatives carried her body 15 km on a bicycle to Khaira police station, staging a road blockade outside the premises.

The family accused the police of failing to arrest the accused even after three days. Though an ambulance was offered, they refused, continuing the march to demand justice.

Police have registered a case and detained Bharati Jena, while investigations are ongoing.

Villagers have urged strict action against all accused, highlighting growing frustration over unresolved land disputes and delayed law enforcement responses.
