8,063 Cooperative Societies Functional in Odisha, Amit Shah Highlights Reforms

Bhubaneswar, July 22: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that out of 8,667 registered cooperative societies in Odisha, 8,063 are currently functional, according to the National Cooperative Database.

He highlighted the government’s push to strengthen cooperatives through financial support, digital transformation, and institutional reforms.

Odisha joined the nationwide computerisation scheme for Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in 2025, with 4,240 PACS approved for digitisation.

The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has already extended Rs 3,352.03 crore in cumulative assistance to the state, covering marketing, dairy, fisheries, storage, and service cooperatives.

Under the “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” initiative, reforms include tax benefits, revival of cooperative sugar mills, creation of new multi‑state cooperative societies, and diversification of PACS into multipurpose cooperatives.

Future plans involve using the National Cooperative Database to identify gaps, introducing a Cooperative Ranking Framework, and establishing a Rehabilitation Fund to revive distressed societies.

These measures aim to modernise Odisha’s cooperative ecosystem, enhance rural livelihoods, and ensure sustainable growth through technology‑driven reforms.
