Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya Expels Lecturer After Harassment Allegations Spark Student Protests

Bhubaneswar: Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya has expelled drama department lecturer Shatrughna Samal following multiple allegations of harassment from female students.

The decision came after written complaints were submitted to the college authorities and the State Culture Department.

Principal Bijay Jena confirmed the expulsion, stating that the action was taken immediately after formal complaints were received. The State Culture Department also announced that the expulsion was final.

Police detained Samal for questioning and have initiated legal proceedings.

The allegations include inappropriate gestures and casting couch behaviour, which students said created an unsafe environment in the drama department.

The incident sparked widespread protests on campus. Students marched on the streets, blocked roads, and staged demonstrations demanding strict action and accountability. Tension gripped the college premises as the agitation grew, with one student falling ill during the protest and being shifted to a medical facility.

Authorities assured that legal action will follow based on the evidence and complaints received. Meanwhile, students have vowed to continue their protest until stronger safety measures are implemented.
