Unseasonal rains lead to more farmer deaths in Odisha amidst crop loss

Four Die of Asphyxiation

Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: The distress caused by extensive crop loss due to unseasonal rains has reportedly claimed the lives of two more farmers in Odisha. One farmer allegedly took his life by consuming pesticide in Sambalpur district, while another died from a heart attack linked to significant crop damage.
According to reports, 57-year-old Ratnakar Bhoi from Bairagipali village in Jujumura block consumed pesticide on Saturday after facing overwhelming distress over his failed harvest. Ratnakar had cultivated paddy on two acres of land, anticipating a yield of around 150 packets. However, erratic rainfall resulted in a harvest of less than 50 packets, leaving him in a state of despair.
In a separate incident in Cuttack district, Indrajit Chatoi, 48, from Sumandi village, also succumbed to distress over crop loss. His family reported that Indrajit visited his fields on Sunday and was visibly stressed after witnessing the damage. Concerned about how to feed his family and manage debts, he suffered a massive heart attack soon after.
These tragic incidents highlight the severe emotional and financial toll on farmers due to unpredictable weather patterns and crop failures in the region.
