Tom Cruise Receives Honorary Oscar at Governors Awards 2025 | Emotional Speech on Cinema’s Power
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise was honoured with an Honorary Oscar at the 16th Governors Awards in Los Angeles on November 16, 2025.
The award was presented by filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is set to direct Cruise in an upcoming project scheduled for release in October 2026.
In a heartfelt acceptance speech, Cruise reflected on the transformative power of cinema, describing it as a force that unites audiences across cultures. “The cinema takes me around the world. It shows our shared humanity — how alike we are in so many ways. Making films is not what I do; it is who I am,” he said.
Cruise also recalled his earliest memories of falling in love with movies, describing how a single beam of light in a dark theatre sparked his imagination and set him on a lifelong pursuit of storytelling.
Before receiving this prestigious recognition, Cruise had been nominated for four Academy Awards for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Top Gun: Maverick (as producer).
The evening also celebrated other luminaries: Debbie Allen was honoured by Cynthia Erivo, Wynn Thomas received a lifetime achievement award in production design, and Dolly Parton accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award via prerecorded message.
The star‑studded event featured appearances by Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sydney Sweeney, Dwayne Johnson, and Emma Stone, setting the stage for the upcoming awards season.
