Three Jajpur Police Officers Suspended Over Custodial Torture Allegations
Jajpur, (OT Webdesk) — In a disturbing case of alleged custodial abuse, three police personnel from Balichandrapur Police Station in Jajpur district have been suspended following accusations of third-degree torture that led a youth to attempt suicide.
Rabindra Mallik, 28, of Mahipur village under Anaka panchayat, reportedly consumed poison after being brutally beaten and stripped naked while in custody. He had been detained for questioning in connection with a family dispute that escalated into violence.
The suspension of Sub Inspector Chinamaya Prusti, ASI Durgesh Nandini Dey, and Constable Debendra Banara came after an inquiry led by SDPO Lakshidhar Swain under the directive of Jajpur SP Yash Pratap Srimal.
Mallik was admitted to SCB Medical College in critical condition and later released on bail. His family alleged that they were kept in the dark about his detention and hospitalisation, learning of his condition only three days later.
The incident traces back to August 3, when Mallik’s cousin allegedly attacked his disabled father and a neighbour with a sword. Rabindra intervened by throwing hot rice gruel at the attacker, which led to his detention and subsequent alleged torture.
The case has sparked outrage and renewed calls for police accountability and human rights safeguards in custodial procedures.
