Subarnapur Ex-GRS Convicted in Bribery Case, Sentenced to Four Years Jail
In a significant judgment reinforcing Odisha’s fight against corruption, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bolangir, has convicted Soubhagyabanta Sahu, a former Gram Rozgar Sevak (GRS) of Panchamahala Gram Panchayat under Ulunda Block in Subarnapur district.
Sahu was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine after being found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe from a beneficiary.
The bribe was sought to release the third instalment of funds under the Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana (BPGY), a flagship rural housing scheme.
The case dates back to June 2018, when Odisha Vigilance registered Sambalpur Vigilance PS Case No.44 against Sahu under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Despite being disengaged from service, he was held accountable for his corrupt practices.
Officials emphasised that the conviction highlights the state’s commitment to transparency and accountability in welfare schemes, sending a strong message against misuse of public office.
