Sorcery Suspicion Sparks Brutal Killing in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: A shocking incident of superstition-driven violence has rattled Uskapalli village under Kalimela police station in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.

A 51-year-old man, identified as Mukka Podiami, was brutally murdered late Wednesday night in an attack allegedly linked to sorcery suspicion.

According to police reports, the victim was assaulted with sharp weapons, leading to his death on the spot. His family lodged a complaint at the local police station, alleging that the killing stemmed from long-standing suspicion of sorcery.

Acting swiftly, Kalimela police registered a case at the Poteru outpost and reached the crime scene. Two brothers, Adma Podiami and Irma Podiami, have been detained for questioning in connection with the murder.

The incident has triggered fear and outrage in the tribal-dominated region, where superstition-related violence continues to pose a serious challenge.

Community members expressed concern over recurring attacks linked to sorcery suspicion and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.

Police officials assured that the investigation is being pursued with urgency. Evidence is being examined, and suspects are being interrogated to establish the motive and sequence of events.

Authorities emphasised that strong legal measures will follow once the inquiry concludes.

This case highlights the persistent dangers of superstition in rural Odisha, where awareness and community intervention remain critical to preventing such tragedies.
