Bhubaneswar, Nov 2: In a tragic incident in the Gaikanapali area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district, at least seven people lost their lives and four others sustained critical injuries after a van collided with a stationary trailer on Saturday. Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred in the early hours near Bileimunda, under the jurisdiction of Hemgir police station.
The victims were part of a ten-member kirtan group from Kandadhuda, Samarpinda, who had traveled to Chakabahal in Chhattisgarh for a Shradh ritual. While returning from the event, their van struck the trailer parked along the roadside from behind.
Six individuals, including the van’s driver, were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining four injured passengers were quickly transported to Hemgir hospital, where one succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed. Although the exact cause of the accident remains undetermined, it is suspected that low visibility due to fog may have hindered the driver’s ability to see the stationary trailer.
