Rohan Bopanna Bids Farewell to Tennis After 22 Glorious Years
Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna has officially announced his retirement, closing the chapter on a remarkable 22-year international career.
His final match came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he and partner N. Sriram Balaji exited in the first round of the men’s doubles.
Bopanna’s journey began in 2002, and over the decades, he became a pillar of Indian tennis.
He reached six Grand Slam finals in doubles and clinched two major titles — the 2017 French Open mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski and the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden.
In a heartfelt statement, Bopanna reflected on his career: “I never imagined I would represent India at such a high level for over 20 years. This was my final tournament, and I’m proud of everything I’ve achieved.”
His retirement also rules out participation in the 2026 Asian Games, marking the end of an era for Indian tennis. Despite missing out on an Olympic medal — notably reaching the mixed doubles semifinals with Sania Mirza in Rio 2016 — Bopanna’s legacy remains etched in the sport’s history.
