Odisha Vigilance NREGS Fraud

Retired Junior Clerk Sentenced to 2 Years RI for Bribery in Jajpur

In a decisive move against corruption, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, has sentenced Laxmidhar Swain, a retired Junior Clerk from the Jajpur Collectorate, to two years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe.

The conviction stems from a case filed by Odisha Vigilance, where Swain demanded illegal gratification in exchange for issuing a registration certificate under the Society Act, 1960.

The court found Swain guilty under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Alongside the prison term, a monetary fine was imposed, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to upholding integrity in public service.

Following the verdict, Odisha Vigilance announced its intent to initiate pension stoppage proceedings against Swain, signalling that accountability will extend beyond retirement.

This case stands as a testament to the state’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption and its ongoing efforts to restore public trust in governance.
