Prime Accused in Puri Gangrape Case Nabbed in Andhra Pradesh
In a major breakthrough, Odisha Police have arrested Manoj Behera, alias Kalia, the prime accused in the gangrape of a 19-year-old woman at Baliharchandi Beach in Puri district.
Behera was apprehended in Andhra Pradesh while attempting to flee the state, marking a critical step in the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred on September 13, when the college student and her male friend were targeted by a group of youths from Chandiput village.
The gang allegedly extorted Rs 2,000 from the couple after capturing compromising photos and videos. When the couple refused to pay more, the male companion was tied up, and the woman was raped in front of him.
Following the survivor’s statement and medical examination, police launched a statewide manhunt. Three suspects were detained, with one—Siba Sahu—already under arrest. Two others remain under interrogation.
The case has reignited public outrage and concerns over tourist safety in Odisha’s coastal regions. Authorities have pledged swift justice and increased security measures in vulnerable areas.
