Bhubaneswar, July 14 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu today visited the second-year B.Ed student of F.M. Autonomous College, Balasore, who is currently undergoing treatment in the burn ward of AIIMS Bhubaneswar following a self-immolation attempt.
After addressing the fifth convocation ceremony of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, President Murmu visited the hospital’s burn unit, accompanied by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
During her visit, the President interacted with the medical team attending to the victim, who has sustained over 90 per cent burn injuries and is fighting for her life.
She enquired about the student’s condition and the treatment being provided.
The President also spoke to the girl’s parents and conveyed her wishes for the student’s speedy recovery.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar Director Dr. Asutosh Biswas informed that the patient is admitted to the ICU and is currently on ventilator support.
He said her condition remains critical and that all advanced treatment facilities available at the institute are being utilised.
Dr Biswas added that the next 72 hours are crucial for the patient. An expert medical committee has been formed to monitor her treatment and condition closely.
The 20-year-old student allegedly attempted self-immolation on the college campus on Saturday, accusing Assistant Professor Samir Kumar Sahu of mental and sexual harassment.
Sahu has since been suspended and arrested following the incident.
