Pollution Breach: Shyam Metallics Plant Shut in Sambalpur

Sambalpur, Odisha: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered the shutdown of Shyam Metallics and Energy Limited in Sambalpur after repeated violations of environmental norms.

The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), along with district administration and police, initiated closure operations across multiple units, restricting employee entry and tightening security.

The CPCB first flagged serious lapses during an inspection in August 2024, followed by a non‑compliance notice in May 2025. A subsequent inspection in March 2026 confirmed continued breaches.

Classified under Category 17 — highly polluting industries — the plant was found to be a major contributor to deteriorating air and water quality in the region.

Authorities have stated that operations will remain suspended until Shyam Metallics rectifies violations and secures fresh clearance from OSPCB. The company has yet to issue an official response.

The enforcement highlights Odisha’s push for stricter environmental regulation and accountability in industrial operations.
