Orissa HC Orders Polythene Ban During Bali Yatra to Curb Pollution
Cuttack, Nov 4: In a decisive move to curb environmental pollution, the Orissa High Court has directed the Cuttack district administration to enforce a strict ban on polythene use during the Bali Yatra festival, which begins November 5.
The directive follows a petition by the Orissa High Court Bar Association, which raised alarm over the rampant use of polythene in the city.
Bar Association president Manoj Mishra and secretary Avijit Patnaik highlighted the adverse effects of polythene waste, including clogged drains, waterlogging, and the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.
They also warned that burning polythene releases toxic gases, exacerbating air pollution and respiratory health risks.
Responding to the concerns, a division bench comprising Justice S.K. Sahoo and Justice V. Narasingh emphasised the urgency of the issue, especially during Bali Yatra, which draws lakhs of visitors annually.
Cuttack ADM Shibo Toppo, appearing virtually, assured the court that the administration would launch awareness campaigns and promote eco-friendly alternatives among traders.
The court recommended the use of reusable cotton, jute, and canvas bags, along with biodegradable materials made from starch or bamboo. It also suggested sustainable food storage options such as silicone bags, beeswax wraps, and glass containers.
In addition to enforcement, the High Court directed the administration to educate the public on the importance of reducing plastic use and adopting sustainable habits in daily life.
