Odisha Steel Plant Projects: Govt Clarifies on AMNS & JSW, 50,000 Jobs Ahead
The Odisha government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and compliance in two mega steel plant projects proposed by AMNS India Pvt. Ltd. and JSW Utkal Steel Ltd., each with a capacity of 24 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
AMNS India’s project, announced in 2021, is progressing through land acquisition and environmental clearance stages.
The government has assured that environmental safeguards will be strictly followed and local interests protected.
JSW Utkal Steel Ltd., which initially received approval for a 12 MTPA plant, has expanded its proposal to 24 MTPA.
The project is expected to generate nearly 50,000 direct jobs, alongside significant indirect employment opportunities.
While the government has hailed these projects as milestones in Odisha’s industrial growth, farmer organisations such as the Ganatantra Kisan Mahapanchayat have raised concerns over land acquisition and livelihood impacts.
The government has pledged that farmers’ interests will be safeguarded during land selection.
Opposition parties have questioned transparency and farmer welfare, but the state maintains that these projects are crucial for economic growth and industrialisation.
